“Mom?”

Static made hearing difficult. Kyleigh picked up the radio, keyed the mike, and answered her daughter. “I’m here, sweetheart. How do you feel?”

“My stomach is a wreck. Anyone else having issues?”

“Not that I’m aware of.”

“Is Elaina in? I don’t think I’m going to make it out of the house today.”

“I’ll go get her and check on you. Be there in a few minutes.”

“OK. Thanks.”

Kyleigh put a sign on the office door indicating she’d be back in fifteen minutes, locked up, and headed out and up the hill to her house. “Elaina!”

When there was no response, Kyleigh opened the door to her guest room to find the bed neatly made and Elaina nowhere in the cabin. She decided to check on Ramona before walking over to the bunkhouse to see if Elaina was there. She found her daughter in the bathroom, doubled over the commode, wretchedly ill. Grabbing a washcloth, she ran it under cool water, passed the rag over her daughter’s face, then filled the cup on the counter. Placing the cloth against her forehead, she urged Mona to rinse her mouth, then helped her into the bedroom to lie down. “How long have you been like this?”

“Since early this morning.”

Kyleigh placed the back of her hand against Mona’s forehead, then cheeks. “You don’t feel feverish. I’m going to get some crackers and a sports drink and leave them by the bed. Eat if you can.”

“I’d rather have ginger ale or a soft drink.”

“You got it.” Kyleigh tucked the covers around Ramona then gathered the items from the kitchen. She rinsed the cloth out with cold water and placed it on the tray, and pulled a trashcan close.

“Here ya go. Holler if you need anything else and I’ll be here as quick as I can.”

Mona sighed. “Thanks, Mom.”

Kyleigh sat with her for a few more minutes, then left when Mona dozed off. She went over to the bunkhouse where she found Elaina and Seth sitting on the porch.

“Good morning, Ms. Kyleigh.”

“Hey there. I need you to come in to work today. Mona’s not well.”

Elaina scrambled to her feet. “I’ll finish dressing and be right down.”

“Thanks.” Kyleigh turned to Seth. “I thought you’d be out with Robert and your dad.”

“I begged off for this morning. Need to get a load or two of laundry done and settle in. I’ll help them after lunch.”

“Sounds fine. We’ll need some paperwork from you if you’re going to work for us, so come on down to the office. I’ll get the employee packet together and you can move your truck while you’re at it.”

“Yes, ma’am,” he said with a slight salute.

Kyleigh couldn’t say he intended to mock her but something about the hard look he sent her way set her teeth on edge.

Thirty minutes later he and Elaina walked in together. Kyleigh handed Seth the employee packet with the forms he needed to fill out clipped on top. She then went over the schedule and explained to Elaina the duties she needed to tend to.
